Potato Day

Helping hundreds of local people grow their own food affordably

Potato Day is one of our most popular annual events. We sell a wide range of high-quality Scottish seed potatoes, alongside onion sets, shallots, garlic, and an excellent selection of pea and bean seeds – all at great prices. You can buy as few or as many tubers as you like, making it perfect for small gardens and container growing.

What We Offer

We supply:

  • Dozens of seed potato varieties from Jamieson Brothers of Annan (JBA)

  • Onion sets, garlic bulbs, and shallots

  • Pea and bean seeds from a local Derbyshire supplier

  • Organic potato fertiliser (Vitax)

All items are sold at cost or just above, helping you save money while supporting our other community projects.

Ordering and Collection

Ordering online is the easiest way to take part – and pre-orders benefit from a small discount compared to ‘on the day’ prices. When you place your order, simply select your preferred collection point, such as Chesterfield, Buxton or Hathersage.

We also coordinate bulk orders in partnership with other local groups, including Transition Loughborough. All proceeds from those sales go directly to support their work.

Our online store shows all varieties that are available. If need a paper list please text ‘Potato Day’ with your name and address to: 07834 838076 or email: spud@potatoday.org.uk

Why We Do It

Potato Day encourages people to grow their own food – whether that’s a few spuds in a bucket, beans up a garden cane, or a full allotment bed. It’s a simple, practical way to get started with home growing, and we aim to make it as easy and affordable as possible.

By offering a wide choice of varieties in small quantities, we give people the chance to try something new without waste. Many of our customers return year after year, and often share their surplus or growing tips with others – which is exactly what we hope for.

Proceeds help to fund other local sustainability projects supported by Transition Chesterfield. See our Projects Overview for a full list of our projects.

We also donate any leftover seed potatoes to local schools and community groups, helping children and others enjoy the experience of growing their own food.

How to get involved

Order your seed potatoes

Browse our online store and choose from a wide range of varieties. Ordering online helps us keep things running smoothly (we’re all volunteers!).

Volunteer your time

We need volunteers in the period leading up to and on the day of Potato Day to sort orders, staff stalls and welcome visitors. Please email spud@potatoday.org.uk if you can help out.

Set up your own Potato Day

If your group would like to run a Potato Day or be a collection point and use our ordering system do get in contact with us: spud@potatoday.org.uk.

Spread the word

Tell your friends, neighbours and local groups. Every new grower makes a difference. Share our event details in newsletters, with your allotment group or on social media.
