SMALL URBAN NATURE SPACE (SUNS)

Our SUNS project demonstrates how even the smallest urban spaces can support wildlife, improve biodiversity and help people connect with nature.
What We Do
Based within the Scarsdale NHS Community Garden, the project showcases practical, low-maintenance approaches to creating wildlife-friendly spaces that can be replicated in gardens, community spaces, schools and workplaces.
The project currently includes a mini wildflower meadow and a drought-resilient planting bed, providing food, shelter and water for pollinators and other wildlife throughout the seasons. By using sustainable gardening practices and simple habitat features, SUNS shows how small changes can make a positive difference for both people and nature.
Why it matters
Wildlife faces increasing challenges from habitat loss, climate change and the fragmentation of green spaces. Pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hoverflies play a vital role in supporting healthy ecosystems, yet many struggle to find food and shelter in urban areas.
The SUNS Project demonstrates how even small spaces can make a positive difference. By creating wildlife-friendly planting and habitats, we hope to inspire people to support nature where they live, work and learn, helping to create a greener, more resilient Chesterfield.
