Seed Swap
Seed Swap is all about getting more people growing – no matter how much space or gardening experience they have.
What We Do
Our Seed Swap project helps people in and around Chesterfield grow their own food and flowers by sharing surplus seeds, free of charge. It’s a simple and accessible way to reduce waste, support biodiversity, and promote local food resilience.
Many of the seeds exchanged have been grown locally, meaning they’re often better adapted to the Derbyshire climate and soil—giving gardeners a stronger chance of success. By growing from seed, people reconnect with nature, improve well-being, and build stronger communities.
Whether you're passing on seeds from your favourite plants, donating unused packets, or picking up something new to try—Seed Swap is a great way to learn and share across generations and cultures. Plants enrich our lives in so many ways and we can all grow something, even using a windowsill.

How to get involved
Save your seeds
Collect, store and label seeds ready to donate to our Seed Swap seed bank. Here’s our short guide on how to do this.
Donate seeds
Donate seeds at the collection points at Inspire Community Garden, or Steph’s Sustainable Stuff in Chesterfield Market Place (S40 1TL).
Swap ‘em
Swap your surplus seeds for varieties that we have in stock - or simply take what you need to get started. Swapping is encouraged, but not essential. A small donation to help the project is always appreciated.

“Seed Swap inspires people to have a go at growing. Children in particular are so happy to go away with a packet of seeds - and who knows what they will gain from that simple act of sharing.”
