Library of Things
Don’t buy, borrow
Transition Chesterfield is setting up a Library of Things in the town where people can borrow, share and return items, building a culture of sustainability, cooperation and reduced waste. It will offer access to a wide variety of items that can be used without the burden and cost of ownership.
Next steps
We have been awarded £5,000 funding from Chesterfield Borough Council’s Community Grant Scheme. We have identified suitable premises and are now looking for additional funding to ensure the project is sustainable. We’re working hard to set up our systems with a view to opening in the Spring.
Benefits of a Library of Things
🔧 Save money — borrow instead of buy (great for occasional use tools).
🌱 Reduce waste — fewer new products, less landfill.
🛠️ Support green skills — repair, maintenance and DIY learning.
🤝 Foster community — shared spaces and volunteer involvement.
We hope that a Library of Things will be operational in Chesterfield in Spring 2026.

Our sign up link and details of membership fees will be available soon. In the meantime, please email borrow@transitionchesterfield.org.uk to express an interest in joining the Library of Things, and we will be sure to update you!
Volunteer with us
The plan is to initially open on Saturday mornings for two hours and one evening during the week - if you can help with one or more of these slots, please contact:
