Thinking of Joining the Core Group?

We’re looking for two new people to join Transition Chesterfield’s Core Group — the team that helps guide the overall direction of the organisation and keeps everything running smoothly.

What is the Core Group?

The Core Group is elected by members each year at the AGM. It’s responsible for:

  • Supporting our projects and volunteers

  • Holding the bigger picture — our values, priorities, and long-term aims

  • Planning group-wide gatherings like the AGM, quarterly meetings, and Christmas social

  • Overseeing finance, stakeholder relations, risk, and volunteer support

In short: we help Transition Chesterfield stay connected, strategic, and resilient - without running every project ourselves.

What sort of things does the Core Group do?

Tasks are shared across the group — things like preparing agendas, managing the budget, replying to queries, or welcoming new members. For a general picture, you can look at Appendix 3 – Committee Tasks Chart in our Thriving Together document. That list is currently being reviewed.

We’ll support new Core Group members to get involved at a level that feels manageable. No one is expected to do everything.

How much time does it take?

The Core Group meets once a month for around two hours (timing agreed by the group). In between meetings, members share out tasks such as replying to queries, preparing for events, or supporting project leads — but this is based on your availability and interests, and you're never expected to take on more than feels manageable.

The aim is to keep things collaborative, realistic, and sustainable, so no one carries too much.

How long would I serve?

The commitment is for one year, with elections at each AGM. Our constitution allows people to serve for up to four consecutive years, though you can of course choose to do just one or two.

Do I need experience?

Nope. If you care about climate action, community, and making a local difference, you're very welcome. You don’t need to have led a project or chaired a meeting - you’ll be supported by a team and encouraged to grow into the role. We’re keen to welcome a mix of voices, skills and life experiences.

How do I stand?

It’s a self-nomination process. Just email hello@transitionchesterfield.org.uk.

Feel free to speak to any of the existing Core Group members - Annie Baldauf-Good, Richard Bateson, Karl Deakin, David Seabrook, Kathy Farr or Paul Richardson to explore further. We'd love to hear from you before the AGM on 18 August 2025.
