We have reached a really exciting and important point in Transition Chesterfield. Come and help us set off on the next stage of our adventure, with the launch of our Working Groups on 18th April.
Transition Chesterfield has accomplished a lot since it started a little over a year ago: film screenings, talks, skills workshops, a harvest swap, a photo competition, a lending library for energy efficiency devices, and a ‘potato day’. Many more projects are being developed or planned. Over 150 people are involved and the number is growing.
So far Transition has been mostly about raising awareness of peak oil and climate change. The next stage of the adventure is to initiate practical solutions to increase the community’s resilience. Some of these are already forming: an ‘Abundance’ project to harvest the fruit that goes to waste in people’s backyards; a sewing circle to convert waste fabric into useful items; and discussions have started to create a Community Supported Agriculture project in Chesterfield.
Many of you may also have projects in mind that you’d like Transition to take on.
For these projects to gain the momentum they need, we need to form Working Groups that will take on projects in specific areas. For example, the Abundance project and the Community Supported Agriculture project could be part of the Food working group. Working Groups would meet as often as necessary, and be fully supported by the Steering Group. Ideally, every Working Group would have a representative on the Steering Group.
We’ve drawn up a list of potential Working Groups, with projects that are already running (green), in the pipeline (blue), or just vague ideas (red).
Download the list here. This list really is just the start, and we need your ideas and suggestions too. If you’d like to add something to it, or have any questions about anything on it, please get in touch by phone (01246 234899) or email hello[at]transitionchesterfield.org.uk.
On 18 April, from 2:30pm to 4:30pm, we’ll be gathering in the Main Hall of the Assembly Rooms (upstairs in the Market Hall) in Chesterfield, to launch the first of the working groups. The event will include brief presentations on possible working groups for Food, Energy, Transport, Education, Waste and Local Economy, and then lots of time for you to share your ideas, discuss potential projects, meet other people who want to join in, and decide how you’d like to get involved. You might want to join one or more of the working groups, get help on an existing project, or even recruit your dream team to set up a new group or project.
At the same event, we’ll be holding our first Annual General Meeting (see here). This will be a fantastic opportunity for you to get involved in what must be just about the most important and exciting adventure in town…
We hope to see you there!
