Plastered!

lime plastering a strawbale extensionLast Saturday several hardy Transition volunteers turned out in the rain to help with lime plastering the Meikle's strawbale extension in Ashgate. Luckily the weather soon improved and the gang made great progress, despite many of them being complete beginners at plastering. It was a rather mucky job, but very satisfying and good fun too!

The Meikle family, assisted by an assortment of volunteers, are building their own timber framed, strawbale extension - and it's been a great oppotunity to learn on the job!

Last Saturday we were applying the second coat of lime plaster to the outside of the extension. This involves mixing the lime, sand and water by hand in a wheelbarrow, then applying the plaster using a plasterer's hawk and trowel, or some trusty marigold gloves.

The outside of the extension will probably need one more layer of plaster now, and then the next job is to plaster the inside of the extension using clay.
