Eco Housing

There are some really interesting projects going on in Chesterfield retrofitting older houses.

Extra insulation is a 'quick win' solution, Celotex, sheeps wool, recycled plastic bottles and polystyrene-backed plasterboard have been used by 'Transitioners' locally.  A straw bale extension, rainwater collection, thermal stores, wood burning stoves and solar water and electricity panels are also part of the local scene.

East Midland Eco Homes 2013 - as part of this region wide initiative two homes in Chesterfield will be open to the public on Sunday March 3rd between 11.00am and 3.00pm.

4 Inkerman Cottages - oak frame, straw bale wall, living roof extension to 1890's end terrace. This is the only part of the house open but elsewhere in the house the original solid walls have 100mm of sheeps wool added as internal insulation, extensive use of cork and thermal boards to insulate a concrete floor, large hot water tank with multiple inputs - solar, multi fuel stove etc.

109 Ashgate Road - large solar array with both PV and water panels. Water panels feeding large thermal store. Underfloor heating and other eco features.

Visitors by bicycle and foot more than welcome, if arriving by car please park considerately on Ashgate Road. Unfortunately there is no bus service along Ashgate Road on a Sunday. Bus 39 or Hulleys are the closest.

Transition Chesterfield organised an 'Eco Homes Open Day' in 2009 and 2010 as part of Heritage Open Days.

One of our 2009 homes was even pictured on the front of the 2010 national brochure!

We had lots of positive feedback from people who had found the visits interesting and inspiring.
