Bike Project: Fossil Fuel to Pedal Power

Case Study now available.  Click here!

Our cycle project, has been made possible with the help of a Climate Friendly Communities Grant from Climate East Midlands, delivered through Groundwork East Midlands.  Transition Chesterfield has been granted £7653 to deliver skills and knowledge to promote cycling in and around Chesterfield, with the greater aim of reducing climate change.

Thank you so much to everyone who has help to make it such a success!

We have been working to help as many people as possible to access pedal power with our range of solutions to make cycling a realistic form of transport!

The project has included:

  • Cycle Training:
48 people have been helped to ride more confidently on the roads with Bikeability training for both beginners and more advanced cyclists, both adults and young people through Wheely Fun Wheels.

  • Cycle mechanic training

Following the training of three members of Transition Chesterfield in professional bike mechanic skills, completing the Bike Inn - Certificate in Attainment, we ran 9 evenings of bike mechanics through Oct - Dec 2011, helping 60 people improve their ability to work with bikes, maintaining them, adjusting them, replacing parts and keeping their bikes on the road.

  • Demonstration of cycling solutions - a cycle roadshow toured events around Chesterfield throughout 2011.  Volunteers were on hand to offer information and advice on riding in our region; with a free Dr. Bike service -  tools and expertise were on hand to help with bike mechanic problems.

  • Support in the construction of a cargo bike
6 people have been working with Paul Southam of Wolftech Cycles designing and building a cargo bike.

UPDATE 30th Dec 2011: We are building two cargo bikes.  The designs have undergone a series of changes to make building a bike before February feasible.  One bike will carry two recycling boxes, whilst a second will be more like a postman's bike.  We are practicing our brazing skills and have been struggling to get our workshop operating correctly, but we finally managed to drill holes with appropriate equipment at the correct angles.  Bike building doesn't seem to be a quick process!  Does anyone have recycling boxes to donate.

The FFtPP project is being run in partnership with the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign, which works tirelessly to support cycling in Chesterfield and the surrounding area.
